SundarSarukkai taught the course "Philosophy and Society" at Naropa Fellowship from 25th to 27th September 2019. Sundar is trained in physics and philosophy, and has a PhD from Purdue University. Till recently, he was a Professor of Philosophy at the National Institute of Advanced Studies, Bangalore. Author of multiple books dealing with Indian Philosophy and Philosophy of science, he has been instrumental in bringing philosophy into the public domain through his newspaper column in a leading newspaper in India.
The course started with discussing the multiple facets of philosophy and its relation with social sciences. Introducing the ideas of critical thinking and logic, Sundar differentiated between Greek and Buddhist understanding of logic. Questioning the narratives of progress, development and science, Sundar examined the notions of public-private in the context of Indian society and analysed the broad differences between ethics and morals.
